How do you Think about what you put on Your Plate?

Tonight on the menu I was inspired by local Market finds at the Kingston Farmers Market.

a Recipe from a local vendor, http://bountynb.ca/nosh/recipes/honey-glazed-salmon-with-blueberry-coulis/, Honey from a local Farm; & Salmon from a fellow vendor as well.
You nevor know what you can find at your Market.  Talk to your Vendor about what they have...you nevor know what you might learn.

I have talked before about Honey and its' health Benfits;
" Honey contains many minerals and immune -boosting properties.
- Honey is also not considered a refined sugar. This means that if you substitute Honey in place of refined sugar you will have a slower release of glucose into your blood stream....and when you have blood sugar in check .... you’ll crave fewer carbs"
I  have also learned that eatin local Honey can help with Seasonal Alergies.  It helps boost your natural anitbodies againt local polens.

Salmon is also wonderful for your health; http://lifestyle.iloveindia.com/lounge/benefits-of-salmon
  • Salmon is rich in Omega- 3 which has benefits towards helping prevent certain Cancers
  • Salmon is a highly nutritious food. High in protein, and the “good fats."
  • did you know that a 4 oz serving of wild salmon provides a full day’s requirement of vitamin D? It is one of the few foods that can make that claim.
  • That same piece of fish contains over half of the necessary B12, niacin, and selenium, and is an excellent source of B6 and magnesium.
  • Canned salmon also contains large amounts of calcium (due to the bones of the fish).
Put these two together and you can only imagine how much of a benefit it was to you and your family to Think about what you "Put on Your Plate" and the main ingredients in this meal came from your local market...who knew supporting local could be so good for everyone!!!!

Well we are certainly well into a good start of Market Season and I love it!!
My kitchen smells so sweet right now, between the tart smell of the Strawberry Rhubarb Jam, and the intoxicating smell of Blueberries mingled with the Peaches makes me crave a piece of pie with Whipped Cream.

These jams are some of my favorite to indulge in this time of year...it transforms your breakfast into a real treat. They also work great to put ontop of a your favorite Vanilla Ice Cream.

They will be out of my kitchen and available at Kredl's Corner Market in Hampton by Tomorrow Morning.

Buns....

I am currently experimenting with a new flat bread....to be used for sandwichs, burgers, grilled delights....we had Mini  Hamburgers the other night.
the bread was moist (not soggy like some of the commercial brands) and it didn't fall apart and looked quite cute on the plat as well.
Instead of cutting the bun in half we cut my homemade hamburger pattie which had onions, peppers, sweetpotatoes and some other stuff already in it. next time I prep my burgers I'll just do them a bit smaller an it will be perfect!!
A little bit of gourment in the middle of week!!

100 Mile Diet

A low carbon diet refers to making lifestyle choices to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions (GHGe) resulting from energy use.[1] It is estimated that the U.S. food system is responsible for at least 20 percent of U.S. greenhouse gases.[2] This estimate may be low, as it counts only direct sources of GHGe. Indirect sources, such as demand for products from other countries, are often not counted. A low carbon diet minimizes the emissions released from the production, packaging, processing, transport, preparation and waste of food. Major tenets of a low carbon diet include eating less industrial meat and dairy, eating less industrially produced food in general, eating food grown locally and seasonally, eating less processed and packaged foods and reducing waste from food by proper portion size, recycling or composting.[3]

As of late I have been hearing a lot about some key buzz phrases that I think make a lot of sense.  We can't save the planet or the economy overnight or all on our own  but we can try to do a little bit at a time. As a single person or family we can't make a huge impression on the magnitude of the issues, but if we think on a larger scale; {similar to the EARTH HOUR concept} about what "products" we buy, use, or support we might be albe to start making a dent... or rather an immpression. Maybe being old fashion is actually being new or current?

Below are some links that you might want to visit to learn a bit more of the philosophy behind the "trend" or rather new way of thinking.

Two Weeks to go...Taking inventory...

Time to stock the shelves... in years past I have always tried when buying my ingredients to have them be as unprocessed as possible without any additives or preservatives when ever feasible...
This year not only am I trying to continue with this effort but I am also going to  be as conscious as possible to use locally produced products for ingredients as well.

20 Days to go....

mmm... Red Pepper Jelly Yumm!!!

Have you ever tried Red Pepper Jelly? The first time I tried Red Pepper Jelly it was paired with cream cheese on a cracker, it was such a perfect combination of sweet and spicy all at the same time... I was hooked.
Then years later I began the quest to find the same taste satisfaction in a jar of Jelly to  enjoy...much to my dismay I could not find one with just the right kick to it.

Thus began my own rendition of the Delicious spread.

It is now a crowd favorite and a staple in our kitchen.... so this week is Jelly production week.
Picking the peppers, washing the peppes, cutting the peppers, cooking the peppers....smelling the peppers....should be a good week.

Be sure to come and visit us on May 1st to have a taste and pick up a jar!!
You'll be hooked. We use it on Salmon, Chicken, Pork, in Grilled Cheese, as a dipping sauce...My sister loves to put it on her Eggs.

Let us know how you use it!!

its in the little things...

Just a thought for you...How often do you find yourself smiling? stop yourself the next time you do...did it take something big or small to make you do it?

The snow is finally melting in my neck of the woods and we are getting ready for some serious spring cleaning. Getting our ducks in a row so to speak. Its suprising how just seeing a flower come up that you planted last fall, the first robin, or being able to open all the windows in you space will make you smile inside and out.

Smiling is contagious so let yourself indulge. No Calories in it I swear.

Let the Countdown Begin...32 days until I head to Market

There are now 32 days until I get ready to head to Market for another season...it may seem like a far ways off but the list will start.

As a Designer by trade it is somewhat of an occupational hazard for me not to think of how everything will look. Who doesn't like to buy something that looks nice?

This year I am going to try and go green. The task for today it decide on my packaging. I like to have everything wrapped up and ready to go. I have always done my own, design my labels, print them off, crop them, then put them on the bags of bagels or cookies...what ever it may be... this year I am going to try and source out  biodegrable bags that will already have my Logo right on it...

Will keep you posted on how I make out.

Off to Market...May 1st

As an Interior Designer by trade, Teacher at a local Community College part time, Full time  Wife,  and busy Mother of 3 (ranging in age for 9 1/2 months to 12 years of age), I am always trying to make sure that the foods I prepare and have on hand for myself and my family are Beautiful, Delicious, and Healthy.

I grew up in home where frozen meals were non-existant, there were always yummy homemade cookies in my school lunches (and Cookie Jar at home), Dessert with every meal, and homemade bread. You name it my mother made it. It's little to no wonder that when I grew up and had a family of my own I wanted to do the same. I have always aspired to make healthy culinary treats for my family on a daily basis...but two years ago I began a sharing my Cynfully Delicious Goodies at a local farmers market.
http://kingstonfarmersmarket.ca/

I make all of my goodies with the most natural or organic ingredients that are available.    I make everything from Pies, Cakes, Cookies, Muffins, Pitas, Pizza Crust, Foccacias, French Bread, Savory Breads, and Bagels (12 different types).  I also do a series of Seasonal Preserves along with my ever popular Red Pepper Jelly.

There really isn't anything I won't attempt to make.

Get ready to Treat yourself to something Cynfully Delicious
